So you see that Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead

What strikes us most clearly about this passage from Luke’s Gospel is just how much, 2000 years later, the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus is like our own Christian experience.  Like to two disciples, we can be disbelieving and still wondering (Lk. 24: 31) about the events of our lives, and about the very presence of God in lives which are sometimes messy and joyless.  The disciples saw the hands and feet of the risen Jesus; He had shared a meal of fish with them – but still they were afraid … still they didn’t believe! Those disciples failed to recognise Jesus at first. It was only when He took bread, gave thanks and broke it at the table that their eyes were opened. When we celebrate the Eucharist and the bread is broken, we too recognise the Lord.

Through the course of our busy week, we can lose sight of Him as we become immersed in the busy-ness of our lives. When we move away from Him,we become confused and unhappy.

Just as Jesus opened the minds of those disciples, so too our minds can be opened to the life-giving message of the word of God.

Just like those two disciples who failed to recognise the risen Christ, even as He stood before them, when we come to Mass, Sunday after Sunday, we may still wonder whether all the claims about Jesus are really true.  We listen to God’s word, we come to the table and eat in the presence of the risen Messiah.  And, although we don’t see the hands and feet or the flesh and bones (Lk. 24: 39,40) in the same way as those two disciples, we walk with Jesus and carry Him to others in need.  In this way, own lives are not far different from the lives of those who actually walked and talked with Jesus on the road to Emmaus!

We learn about Jesus by reading the Gospel and listening to what He says to us.  He wants YOU to be His apostle too!  Pray to Him, and ask Him to make you more like Him.  Not everyone knows about Jesus or loves Him.  So try your best to take His love to others.

                                                                                                            Jesus I believe in You

                                                                                                                  and I love You

I want to be like You.

                                                                                                       Make me a good apostle!
