From the 12th century, the dedication of St. Peter’s on the Vatican Hill, and St. Paul’s on the Via Ostiense, have been celebrated on this day as the anniversary of their dedication by Pope St. Silvester and Pope St. Siricius in the 4th century. The feast was extended to the whole Roman Rite and, as the anniversary of the dedication of St. Mary Major’s honours the motherhood of Our Blessed Lady, so too this feast honours the memory of the two Princes of the apostles.
